What is rhassoul clay and where does it come from?

Rhassoul is a natural mineral clay from Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. The clay, which has been used since way back in the eighth century, is now used in hammams and Turkish baths. You can also find the clay in some beauty products and incorporated into other face and body treatments.

What happens during a rhassoul clay spa treatment?

NOTE: There are many rhassoul treatments and experiences available at the 500+ spas we represent nationwide - always check the website for your chosen venue to determine the exact details of your treatment.

Most rhassoul experiences occur within a Turkish bath, steam chamber/room, or sauna setting. It is usually the case that no spa therapist is present throughout the treatment - spa guests can simply help themselves to handfuls of rhassoul mud from the buckets provided and then rub this over their bodies, face, hair and scalp.

After application, you can sit back, close your eyes and unwind (usually for 30-45 minutes) to allow the rhassoul to do its work. Calming music may be played and additional bursts of steam will fill the room periodically in order to keep the mud damp and pliable.

Towards the end of your treatment, a ceiling shower may turn on to indicate that it is time to rinse off. Alternatively, Kneipp water hoses may be available in the steam facility, or a member of staff may direct you to another room in which to clean yourself up.

TIP: Do not use shower gel - or any other cleansing product - when rinsing (unless instructed) as this could undo the benefits of your treatment.

What are the health and beauty benefits of a rhassoul mud experience?

The increasing popularity of rhassoul spa treatments is hardly surprising considering the extensive list of benefits the mineral-rich mud provides:

Soothes the symptoms of many skin ailments: Rhassoul clay is naturally anti-inflammatory and has analgesic properties, meaning its use can greatly reduce the symptoms of many skin complaints, including eczema and psoriasis

Detoxification: Rhassoul mud has a naturally powerful, negative electromagnetic charge. The majority of toxins under your skin have a positive charge. This makes rhassoul treatments ideal for drawing out impurities and detoxifying your skin.

Naturally antimicrobial: Rhassoul clay is antimicrobial and is known to kill viruses, protecting your skin from attack without damaging individual skin flora.

Dead skin cell removal: Rhassoul spa formulas are refined to comprise a fine grit which will exfoliate your skin, encouraging the shedding of dull and tired cells, brightening your complexion.

Reduction of sebum secretion: The clay is also ideal for preventing overactive sebum secretion in your skin and scalp, which can lead to both oily hair and acne.

Tightening of pores: Rhassoul clay also tightens large, open pores which are not just an aesthetic complaint but also make your skin more prone to spots and other blemishes.

Softer, hydrated skin: The nourishing and emollient properties of rhassoul mud will rehydrate your skin, boosting its condition, appearance and elasticity.

Reduces dandruff, and increased hair volume and body: Rhassoul-nourished scalps are also less prone to dryness, which can lead to itchiness and dandruff. The mud also improves the health of follicles, and can make thinning hair more voluminous.

Improved skin deodorisation: Regular use of rhassoul clay can lead to less reliance on deodorant spray, for it has natural deodorising effects.

FAQs

What should I wear?

You will need to wear a bikini or swimsuit during your rhassoul mud spa treatment (nudity is seldom allowed at UK spa resorts). Since rhassoul mud can sometimes stain clothing, you should avoid wearing pale-coloured (or expensive!) swimwear.

Will my partner and I have privacy during our rhassoul spa treatment?

Depending on the number of bookings and suitable facilities your selected spa has, you may have to share your rhassoul mud experience with a number of other guests. If you are seeking a private experience for you and your friend or partner, you should ring your venue far in advance of your visit to make this request.

It should be noted that an additional fee may apply to guarantee exclusive use of facilities, or to secure a couples’ rhassoul experience, if available.
