About
A day or a stay of complete and utter perfection is ready and waiting for you at the exquisite Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House. This idyllic Georgian masterpiece is set amid 12 acres of tranquil Hertfordshire countryside, and it’s an absolute paradise for lovers of luxury. Friendly, fabulous and family-owned, it’s the perfect setting for the indulgence that your mind, body and spirit have been craving.
Once the country home of Lord Mountbatten. Sopwell House has been transformed into a truly hedonistic haven. A £14 million investment led to the creation of one of the finest spa facilities to be found anywhere in the country. Yet the Cottonmill Spa harbours an even-more fabulous secret inside its spectacular glass walls. Inside the spa you’ll find the exclusive Club at Cottonmill, and this inner sanctum is the epitome of barefoot luxury.
The Club at Cottonmill has a chic, botanical feel, with a spa garden designed by landscape gardener Ann-Marie Powell, complete with water features and greenery in abundance. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows bring the outdoors-in and even the sauna has a fabulous view.
If you can stop lounging in luxury for long enough, you’ll find plenty to see and do in the local area, including of course lovely long walks through the hotel’s grounds. Be sure to set aside some time for retail therapy in the streets of St Albans, where you’ll also find plenty of Roman heritage that’s worthy of exploration. The popular Verulamium Museum is a magnet for those with a penchant for history.
The gorgeous Sopwell House is perfect for overnight breaks well away from the hustle and bustle. There are 128 majestic rooms and suites waiting here, not to mention of course the stunning new Cottonmill spa. And when it’s time to dine, there are two superb restaurants that offer plenty of mouth-watering temptations.

The Spa & Wellness at Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House
In need of a little indulgence therapy? At the Cottonmill Spa you’ll find two levels of jaw-dropping luxury that will leave even seasoned spa-goers seriously impressed.
Cottonmill Spa
Open to all hotel guests or those here on a spa day, Cottonmill Spa is an inspiring space. With a sumptuous design that’s fully integrated with its natural surroundings, everything here is aimed at enhancing your well-being.
After a therapeutic soak in the atmospherically lit indoor pool, there are two vitality pools to explore, as well as a sauna and starlit steam room. Enjoy a quiet moment to read in the poolside relaxation area or terrace, before heading to the Sitting Room for a snack, juice or a gin cocktail in front of the fireplace. Then pad along to the Pantry for lunch, eaten while surrounded in the softness of your fluffy white robe.
Enjoy a glass of bubbly with your glossy grooming at the Salon, or try a hot sand experience. Lay on the warm and comforting amber sand, while a quartz bed gently vibrates beneath you. Bliss!
Sit back and let go in the gentle, calming Rose Relaxation Room. Walls are lined with acoustic ‘petals’ and relaxation zones are discreetly divided by rose-tinted glass screens.
The Club at Cottonmill
Within the spectacular Cottonmill Spa lies an inner sanctum, reserved exclusively for a select few.
With all the feel of a private members’ club, the Club at Cottonmill is an experience like no other. Hanging seats arranged around statement fireplaces add a playful touch, while glass walls bring the spectacular spa gardens inside.
Float from inside to outside through sleek, thermal pools, taking time to luxuriate on bubble beds and massage jets. Take refuge in the Botanical Steam Room or Panoramic Sauna, then cool off in the experience showers. Allow your senses to be stimulated in the cocoon-like Deep Relaxation Room, or soak up the views at the blissfully peaceful Whisper Room.
Wander in the spa gardens. They were designed by gold-medal-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show designer Ann-Marie Powell, so you know you’re in for something really special. We find they’re best enjoyed with a glass of something sparkly, stretched out in a cosy cabana while the sun goes down.
The Gym & Fitness at Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House
You’ve aligned your mind and soul in the spa. Now it’s time to enhance the wellbeing of your body in the gym. Make sure you’ve packed your leggings, because crushing your fitness goals feels like a breeze in this inspiring space.
Flooded with natural light from vast Georgian windows that overlook the gardens, you’ll find zoned areas for cardio, weights and training. The world-class gym is equipped with the latest Technogym ‘Artis’ line of cardio strength and training machines which let you track your training to give a 360-degree view of your wellness.
Like to reconnect as you workout? Join a group class. There’s spinning, Pilates, HIIT and yoga on offer, along with dance fit and Tabata. More intimate lessons can be had in subdivided areas with atmospheric lighting to energise or soothe your mood.
Restaurants & Food at Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House
You’ve pampered yourself at the spa. Now it’s time to truly indulge with the heavenly food and drink experiences to be had within the Georgian surroundings of Sopwell House.
The Cocktail Lounge
For pre-dinner drinks and light bites, the fabulous Cocktail Bar is well-worth dressing up for. With bags of character provided by stained-glass windows, towering bookcases and statement fireplaces, you can sit up at the ornate marble topped-bar while attentive staff mix you something fruity. Prefer to get cosy? Then sink into large velvet armchairs and enjoy the fire.
The Brasserie
Lazy lunches, delicious dinners, decadent afternoon teas. They’re all on offer at the vibrant Brasserie. Light and airy with a contemporary feel, the open plan kitchen adds to the relaxed vibe. Serving an all-day menu fusing British and Mediterranean cuisine, there are daily specials and an all-important Sunday roast.
Omboo
From its Spa to the Club, Sopwell House is all hedonism. Asian restaurant Omboo fits perfectly into the mix, bringing a touch of glamour to proceedings. Decked out with dark wooden tables, leafy wallpaper and zesty pops of colour throughout, it feels chilled-out yet buzzy. Indulge in sharing platters inspired by the spice routes of Asia, but don’t expect your food to arrive all together. The philosophy here is “when ready” - dishes are simply delivered to your table fresh out of the kitchen.
