About

Fancy staying in Georgian splendour? What about spending hours wallowing in toasty-warm, mineral-rich waters? Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Derbyshire Peak District, the Buxton Crescent Hotel is a haven of elegance. This beautifully-restored Grade I-listed building is a masterpiece of Georgian architecture, inviting you to step back in time while indulging in some very contemporary luxury.

From the moment you arrive, you can’t fail to be impressed by the hotel's honey-hued grandeur. The sweeping, landmark crescent, a testament to the town's spa heritage, creates a sense of awe and wonder. But while the building has curb-appeal aplenty, step inside to find interiors with the wow-factor, too. Think twinkling chandeliers, roaring fires, four-poster beds and a supremely sensuous spa that’s the highlight of the hotel.

Unwind in the toasty waters of the thermal pool and admire the original Victorian tiling. Float in a relaxation pool while gazing at the starry-sky ceiling. Work-out in the state-of-the-art gym, then head to the roof to enjoy the indoor/outdoor swimming pool. Go on a thermal journey through saunas and steam rooms. Then just feel yourself drift away while therapists apply their knot-untying know-how in one of the spa’s 21 treatment rooms.

The hotel may date back to the 1700s, but there’s heritage all around you too. Right in the centre of town, the Crescent is a short stroll from all of Buxton’s best bits. There’s the Devonshire Dome, the Buxton Opera House and the Pavilion Gardens to enjoy. Love to hike? Known as the ‘Gateway to the Peak District’, Buxton has picturesque dales to ramble, so don’t forget your walking boots.

But the hotel’s prime location is only part of its attraction. Settle beside the fire in the cosy Lounge for post-spa cocktails before heading to its elegant restaurant for dinner. And when you’re ready to call it a night, the hotel’s 81 bedrooms make an elegant place to lay your head.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa do afternoon tea?

It does. Feed your appetite for luxury by tucking into a classic selection of dainty finger sandwiches, homemade scones fresh from the oven and an irresistible selection of cakes, all served with an aromatic brew. Add some sparkle with a glass of something sparkly if the occasion calls - and we can’t think of an occasion when it doesn’t.

Served in the Spa Cafe if you’re here on a package, you’ll mingle, sip and savour without having to leave the comfort of your robe.

Does Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa have a swimming pool?

It has three! Inside, the star of the show is the thermal pool. It is filled with mineral-rich water from a nearby ancient spring (St Ann’s Well) that emerges deep from the earth at a toasty 27°C. The water here is left untreated so there are no chemical nasties to spoil your zen. It’s surrounded by original Victorian tiles and has a stunning stained glass canopy overhead.

There’s also an indoor to outdoor rooftop pool with two incorporated whirlpools, and an indoor relaxation pool with a starry sky ceiling. Water babies will be in heaven.

Does Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa have accommodation?

It sure does! Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa has a choice of 81 rooms, many with high ceilings, sash windows and elegant Georgian colours. Most overlook the Crescent with its public park beyond. Rooms range from cosy Attic rooms under the eaves, to huge Suites with four-poster beds and roll-top baths.

What are the check-in and check-out times at Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa?

Here on an overnight stay at Buxton Crescent? Lucky you! You can check in anytime from 3pm, while checkout is by 11am. The hotel will happily store your luggage for you outside of those times. For spa day packages, arrival times vary. Check your booking confirmation for details.

Is the Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa accessible?

It is. Despite being nearly 250 years old, the hotel is fully accessible to wheelchair users throughout. There are two ground-floor accessible rooms and two fully accessible rooms that are DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliant. Lifts can take you to bedrooms, the spa and restaurant, and there’s even a pool lift.

What’s the history of Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa?

Designed by John Carr of York in the late 1700's Buxton Crescent is one of the UK's finest examples of Georgian architecture. You’ll immediately be immersed in the Grade I-listed romance - and probably want to find out a bit more about its history.

The Crescent was built for William Cavendish, the 5th Duke of Devonshire, as part of his scheme to establish Buxton as a fashionable Georgian spa town. It faces the site of St Ann's Well, where warm spring water has flowed for thousands of years.

As the years rolled on, the Crescent housed two hotels, council offices, a library and a clinic. By 1992 it lay empty, until it was bought by the local council. There were plans to turn it into flats, until the Heritage Lottery Fund stepped in to restore the Crescent as a hotel and to build new spa facilities.

Seventeen years and £68.4 million later, hotel group Ensana reopened as a luxury hotel - and it’s been wowing guests ever since.

Where is the Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa located?

You’ll find it in a magnificent heritage building on Buxton Crescent, the Georgian row designed by John Carr of York in the 18th century. Originally two grand hotels until a magnificent refurb combined them into one, its position in the heart of Buxton means that you can explore the town on foot. But it also provides easy access to the beautiful Peak District National Park.

What should I pack for a spa day at Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa?

You’ll need to bring your swimwear for the fabulous spa facilities, and your gym kit if you fancy a workout in the well-equipped gym. Don’t forget your book or a magazine for all that lounging around you’ll be doing!

Flip-flops, towels and robes are all provided, and changing rooms come well-equipped with GHD hairdryers and straighteners, so you can leave these items at home.

Another dry set of swimwear is a good idea if you were having a treatment - make it a dark one if you wanted to try the Therapeutic Mud Pack treatment! And, if you’re planning on lunch or dinner in the restaurant in the hotel itself, you’ll need something smart/casual - it’s quite fancy!

Is Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa family friendly?

It is. Along with children’s menus, the hotel has 10 family rooms featuring king-sized beds and a sofa bed. Children can eat with you in the spa café and splash in the rooftop pool. However the thermal spa facilities are blissfully adults only.

Is Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa dog friendly?

Time to pack their little doggy suitcase, because well-behaved pooches are welcome at the Buxton Crescent Hotel. It costs £25 per dog, per night, and they can’t join you in any restaurants or the spa.

Does Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa have a golf course?

No, there is no golf course at Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa. However there are two nearby. The 18-hole Cavendish Golf Club frequently makes it into the Top 100 lists in popular golfing magazines, because it’s thought to be one of the best layouts in the world under 6000 yards. Or there’s the High Peak Golf Club with its glorious views.
