Its Bodyscene health and leisure club isn’t just the home of the large swimming pool, thermal suite and, of course, the stunning Fretwell Spa. It’s also where you’ll find a state-of-the-art gym, with separate cardio and weights areas, and a leisure café to relax in after all your hard work.

Some 40 exercise classes are held each week in its Energy Centre & Mind and Body Studios, from Insanity to Zumba. Try a bike-based workout to a pumping soundtrack with Indoor Cycling, or head to the pool for an invigorating Aquafit class.

Rich historical architecture and contemporary amenities may be a stand-out feature at this sumptuous Yorkshire hotel, but the delicious food and drink on offer at Hellaby Hall will distract you from your elegant surroundings.

No matter what you're in the mood for, you'll find something to tempt you. The chefs here are passionate about using fresh, local ingredients, with delicious dishes that showcase Yorkshire produce to perfection. 

So where should you head for your post-massage G and T, a light bite or delicious dinner? Take the stairs or lift to the first floor, directly above reception. Here you’ll find the bar, lounge, TV area and the restaurant itself. 

The Carnelly Restaurant

Catch up with friends and family at the stylish Carnelly Restaurant, where the ever-changing British menu is complimented by views over the hotel's stunning landscaped gardens. Talented team of chefs cook everything fresh to order, so nibble on homemade focaccia and sip a glass of wine while you wait for your mains. But will you choose treacle-cured beef, cod loin or a steak served sizzling from the in-house grill?

The Carnelly Bar and Lounge 

Pull up a comfy chair or sink into a squashy sofa in the homely Carnelly Bar and Lounge. Choose your favourite tipple then indulge in something from the bar menu - there’s everything from salads and sandwiches to burgers and sausage and mash. You can also indulge your taste for luxury with a cream tea or decadent traditional afternoon tea.

There is and, at 20m by 10m, it’s one of the largest private heated indoor swimming pools in Yorkshire. Found in the hotel’s health club, Bodyscene, you’ll also find a steam room, sauna and plunge pool to enjoy, poolside.

Hellaby Hall Hotel has 89 stylish bedrooms, including Standard, Executive, Family and Accessible rooms, plus the luxurious four-poster Fretwell Suite. The original bedrooms in the Grade-II house have been updated with modern bathrooms, all whilst keeping the character and charm of the original building. 

Can’t choose between Standard and Executive? Standard rooms have either a double bed or two single beds with TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities. They either have a walk in shower or a bath shower. Executive rooms are all tastefully decorated and have complimentary Wi-Fi.

Yes it is. There are two accessible rooms. These were newly refurbished in 2019 and feature large doors and walk-in shower en-suites.

Hellaby Hall Hotel can be found in the charming village of Hellaby, in the district of Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Hellaby has a rich history, with records dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086. The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside, offering plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling.

You’re also just six miles from Rotherham, 11 miles from Doncaster and 12 miles from Sheffield, perfect for shopping at Meadowhall, visiting the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, or skating at Ice Sheffield.

Completed in 1692, the Hall was designed in the Jacobean style for rich merchant Ralph Fretwell, the man who lends his name to the Fretwell Spa. After changing hands over the years it was bought in 1918 by Cliff Carnelly, the Hall’s last resident. Carnelly moved out in 1976, and a fire in 1980 destroyed much of the building’s interior. It lay derelict until 1995, when it reopened as a hotel.

The hotel is fabulously family-friendly with four Standard family rooms consisting of two double beds and two Barn Conversion family rooms which can sleep up to six. There’s a children’s menu packed with family favourites and plenty of attractions nearby, with the Tropical Butterfly House, Gulliver’s Kingdom and Yorkshire Wildlife Park all within a 12-mile drive.

While children under the age of 16 can’t use the Fretwell Spa or have treatments, they can splash about in the 20m swimming pool at the Bodyscene, the hotel’s well-equipped health club.

Love to pamper and play? While there’s no golf course on-site, the 18-hole, par 71 Sitwell Park is just five miles away in Rotherham. Designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie, who helped create the Augusta National, you’ll find its sloping fairways, elevated greens and fast undulating putts are a tricky challenge for any golfer. A handicap is required to play here, and there’s a dress code - no jeans, tracksuits or trainers.
