For an experience like no other, head to the heritage-packed Turkish Baths and Spa. One of only 11 original Victorian Turkish baths still in operation in the UK, it’s an oasis of old-world charm in the hustle and bustle of the city.
Tucked away in a prime spot slap-bang in the centre, this subterranean hideaway blends the traditions of the hammam with the very best in contemporary spa-going. Part of a multi-pound restoration project which saw the Grade II, art-deco City Baths brought back to their former glory, classic designs of mosaic tiles and Islamic arches feel luxurious. Yet it’s completely unpretentious - and a fun activity to do with friends.
The perfect antidote to city life, at the Turkish Baths and Spa Newcastle you can switch off, unwind and recharge. Work your way up the thermometer in the tepidarium, caldarium and laconium. When it all gets too much, a cold plunge shower awaits - as does your leather daybed in a delightfully authentic, wooden screened relaxation booth. With a 24m swimming pool and café bistro, plus Templespa treatments and a mud chamber to boot, chances are you won’t want to leave this blissful bubble. But because you’re right in the city centre, nightlife, shopping, football and culture are all just a hop, skip and jump away.
Catch a gig at the Newcastle Arena - or head to O2 City Hall, seeing it’s right next door. Check out the latest trends at Eldon Square or cheer on the Magpies at St James’ Park. Gaze at the oil paintings in nearby Laing Gallery or take in an exhibition at the Biscuit Factory. But if it all gets too much, rest assured that the soothing warmth and luxurious rituals of the Turkish Baths and Spa awaits you. It's the perfect retreat amidst the city’s vibrant energy.

A fabulous art-deco building, it housed two swimming pools and the famous Turkish baths.
Although it was Grade II listed in 1992 for its historical and architectural importance, the City Baths were threatened with closure by owners Newcastle City Council as part of austerity cuts. But a determined community campaign led to a 12-year restoration project that retained its fabulous original features (like the wood pannelling, mosaic tiles and iconic glass ceiling dome) while also adding shiny new facilities like a spa and cafe bistro.
