About

Got a thing for country house retreats that just happen to have one of Britain’s most historic cities on their doorsteps? We’ve got a feeling you’re going to like it at Rowton Hall Country House Hotel & Spa. Set in a classic Georgian mansion in eight acres of leafy grounds, its pin-drop peaceful setting feels miles away from anywhere. Yet because it’s just three miles from the centre of Chester you can combine a spot of city culture with all that pampering you’ll be doing.

With 40 individually-designed bedrooms and period charm a-plenty, the vibe here is everything you want from a boutique bolthole - elegant, grand and romantic. But the main draw has to be Rowton Hall’s spa, which offers Elemis facials and body rituals along with a shimmering blue pool, bubbling whirlpool and thermal suite. There’s a Spa Bistro for the kind of afternoon teas and lunches you don’t have to get dressed for, and plenty of spaces to curl up with a good book.

Beyond the hotel, the Roman city of Chester brims with must-see treasures. Go for a flutter on the horses at the oldest still-in-use racecourse in the country, or visit the Roman Amphitheatre to imagine the gladiator fights that once took place here. Walk the two miles of City Walls - the most complete in Britain - or head to the Rows for high street and independent stores. Chester Zoo and Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet are both close by, as is the surrounding Cheshire countryside.

After all that sightseeing and shopping, dinner at Rowton Hall’s elegant Thyme restaurant awaits. Expect to find modern British cuisine at its finest, featuring produce that’s as fresh and local as it comes - hand-picked straight from the hotel's kitchen garden.

Spa days and stays at Rowton Hall Hotel & Spa offer more than just an escape - it's an immersion into history and luxury. Whether you seek spa relaxation,  city exploration, or perhaps just a touch of grandeur, this timeless hotel promises an unforgettable experience.

The Spa & Wellness at Rowton Hall Country House Hotel and Spa

Sink into serenity at the Spa at Rowton Hall, a place where only the very best will do. Designed for your utter rest and relaxation you’ll feel your shoulders drop the minute you see the shimmering blue waters of the indoor pool set against the lush green lawns of the walled garden beyond.

Here, luxurious treatment rooms and a dedicated relaxation area are just the start of your journey into self-care. Take a moment to breathe the scented air as you put on your snuggly robe and slippers. Bring your book for poolside chilling on a comfortable day bed, but chances are you’ll spend more time gazing out on those glorious garden views. Atmospherically lit on darker evenings, there’s nothing more magical than having a twilight dip in the warm water.

Flit between the different thermal experiences on offer. This sumptuous sanctuary includes a steam room, sauna and a warm, bubbling whirlpool.

The zen-like treatment rooms offer a selection of rituals from Elemis that are designed to spoil you, whether you’re seeking beautiful skin or inner calm. Apply the final finishing touches to your spa escape with a mani/pedi or beauty treat, then float out of the spa, glowing from top to toe.

The Gym & Fitness at Rowton Hall Country House Hotel and Spa

Unless you’ve got a will of iron, sticking to your fitness goals while you’re on a decadent spa break can be tough. But the state-of-the-art gym at Rowton Hall will make you want to take a few moments away from all the splurging, pampering and treating yourself. No, really!

Fully-equipped with cardio equipment and weights, the gym will see you sculpting and toning like never before. Kitted out with the very latest Pulse machines, windows that look out onto the swimming pool and Rowton Hall’s wonderful walled garden make working out feel like a breeze.

Prefer to exercise out in the fresh air? We hear you. Take a relaxing stroll through eight acres of grounds, or bring your trainers and head further. You can take a very pleasant (and mostly flat) stroll along the Shropshire Union Canal that takes you into the centre of Chester in an hour.

A great way to get your steps up, just follow the canal path as it makes its way through Christleton and Great Boughton. Designated as an area of nature conservation value, you'll see a wide variety of wildlife as you stroll, including mute swans, ducks and moorfowl. You may even be lucky enough to spot kingfishers or grey herons.

Restaurants & Food at Rowton Hall Country House Hotel and Spa

Ultra-indulgent spa breaks need ultra-indulgent eating and drinking options to match. Luckily at Rowton Hall Hotel & Spa you’ll find the food is every bit as fine as the spa treatments.

If you’re here for a spa package, afternoon teas and lunches are served in the sumptuous Spa café where you can eat without having to get dressed. Just watch out for crumbs in your robe!

Fancy something a bit more à la carte? The hotel’s Thyme restaurant is well worth getting dressed up for. Expect to find dishes featuring produce as local as it gets - many ingredients are sourced from the hotel's own kitchen garden.

Enjoy long, lingering lunches in the elegant main dining room or opt for the more relaxed setting of the Bar Lounge, where plush armchairs and warm lighting create a cosy ambience.

The Spa was lovely clean and organised. It was a surprise for my boyfriend’s 30th birthday who had never had a spa day! We both felt really welcomed and relaxed. We would love to come back again!

We went to Rowton for the afternoon to celebrate my friends birthday and had a wonderful time. The treatments both of us had were fantastic and the afternoon tea was lovely. Staff were very attentive and friendly. The only improvement for me would be to clear up the changing rooms a little more. In the gents there were used towels thrown around everywhere but nothing major.
