Historic, attractive and wonderfully luxurious, this idyllic retreat in the former mining village of West Auckland in County Durham is the perfect choice for both days and stays that tick all the right boxes.
Make sure you set aside some time to hit the stores in Durham and to check out the dramatic Cathedral as well. The fascinating National Railway Museum Shildon deserves to be at the top of your must-visit list, and the Beamish Museum is also a superb attraction. To the west of the hotel you’ll be able to explore the rural splendour of the North Pennines AONB.

This was our first visit for myself and my daughter, and it totally lived up to expectations. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The room, food and facilities were perfect and cleanliness was of a high standard. Our spa treatment was relaxing and tailored to what we wanted. Perfect!

Stayed here with my friend for my birthday and paid £10 to upgrade from a cosy double to a courtyard twin. The room wasn’t ready to check in at 3pm and we had to wait 20 minutes but overall a good size and had everything you would need including a smart tv with Netflix ect. The room also gets very hot and with no air con and a very small window it can get uncomfortable during the summer months. The spa facilities were lovely and definitely one of the best I’ve visited in terms of relaxing and being modern. It was very busy most of the day but that can’t be helped. Towels and robes provided and access from check in till 9pm. Breakfast was very good with lots of choices from continental to full English. The restaurant is very relaxing and couldn’t fault it other than it closes for breakfast at 9:30am which is early compared to most. Overall had a lovely spa break and it’s definitely worth the money. I would definitely stay here again.
