About

In need of some luxurious R and R? Make a pilgrimage to The Manor House Hotel & Spa. It may be located on the Way of Life Northern Saints Trail, a treasure trove of ancient churches and castles. But, with an award-winning spa crammed with heat and hydro experiences, it makes a great spot for weary travellers to partake in some healing waters of their own.

Reputed to be Henry VIII’s former hunting lodge and dating back to the 12th century, this Grade-I listed building is full of olde-worlde warmth. Its antiquity brings bags of character, with the odd creaky floorboard, wonkily shaped room and plenty of nooks and crannies. Sip your favourite tipple in the Beehive Lounge, named after its original brick beehive oven, before dining in the Manor Restaurant- expect lots of locally-sourced dishes to sink your teeth into.

But there’s more than just historic charm and a home-from-home feel to help you unwind here. Wrap yourself in a plush robe and retreat to the Manor Spa for soothing stints in the sauna, steam room or jacuzzi. Take a dip in the sparkly pool or just soak up the sun from a rattan lounger in the conservatory. Massages, facials and wraps take place in two tranquil treatment rooms, enhanced by luxe products from Temple Spa.

Got time to go exploring? There's always something going on in nearby Bishop Auckland, plus Auckland Castle is a must-see for history-lovers. Head over to Durham for a bit of shopping or to gaze at the Cathedral, or tour Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon. To the west of the hotel you’ll be able to explore the rural splendour of the North Pennines.

But however you choose to spend your day, when it’s time to call it a night The Manor House Hotel & Spa awaits. All 30 beautiful bedrooms blend modern touches with antique flourishes. So whether you're seeking day spa relaxation or a cosy country getaway, this unique hotel ticks all the boxes.

The Spa & Wellness at The Manor House Hotel & Spa

Slow down and loosen up at The Manor Spa in West Auckland. Full of just as much historic charm and period features as The Manor Hotel itself, its exposed beams and gorgeous brickwork combine to form a soothing sanctuary that’s so good for calming your soul.

Immerse yourself in the warm water of the sparkly 14m pool, where a huge screen transports you to sun-drenched shores and cosy firesides as you perfect your breaststroke. Bask in the gentle heat of the Jacuzzi and the cleansing warmth of the sauna, before unblocking pores in the scented air of the steam room.

After a cool shower to awaken your senses, retreat to the light-filled conservatory, where rattan sun-loungers and soft chairs beckon for a snooze in the sunshine - you can even recline outdoors on sunny days.

But no spa day is complete without one of The Manor Spa’s tempting treatments. Whether you’re seeking beautiful skin or inner calm, you'll find a range of rituals from Temple Spa, full of the relaxing aromas of Mediterranean botanicals.

Please note -

Pregnant clients in the first trimester are unable to have any treatments.

Pregnant clients in the second trimester can have a facial.

Pregnant clients in the third trimester can have a pregnancy massage.

The spa strongly recommend not to use the heat facilities when pregnant.

The Gym & Fitness at The Manor House Hotel & Spa

Fitness fanatic? Pack your snazziest leggings because the Manor House has a swish gym you can use as part of your spa package. It’s crammed with Matrix cardio kit, plus there are weights, so you never have to miss leg day.

But if you prefer to work up a sweat in the great outdoors (and do some sightseeing at the same time) you’ll be in your element. The Manor House is on the Way of Life Northern Saints Trail, a 29-mile ancient pilgrim route that runs from Gainford to Durham.

Hiking just a section will take you past healing waters and unique destinations like Escomb Saxon Church and Auckland Castle, all the way to Durham Cathedral and Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Restaurants & Food at The Manor House Hotel & Spa

Dreaming of afternoon teas, lingering lunches or a cocktail by a crackling fire? You’ll be expertly fed and watered at The Manor House Hotel. Surrounded by a treasure trove of local food producers, some of County Durham’s finest artisans are right on the hotel’s doorstep. Chefs make great use of the region’s vibrant food culture - and pick their own herbs from the on-site garden.

The Manor Restaurant

Here on a spa day that includes lunch? You can eat it in your robe in this orangery-style dining room, for a spot of laid-back luxury. With garden views and bags of natural light, in the warmer months they leave the French doors open so you can savour the fresh air while you dine. But what to eat? You’ll find everything from quirky Korean burgers to traditional fish and chips.

The Beehive Bar & Lounge

Afternoon tea is delicately poured at the Beehive Lounge. This elegant space has historic charm in abundance, thanks to its unique centrepiece (and namesake) - a brick beehive bread oven set on a high plinth. Relax, sip, and scoff your scones as you soak up the original stonework, oak panelling, and the cosy charm of the feature fireplace.

50 minute treatments were nice, unfortunately there seamed to be a problem with the spa music not playing, so was a little off putting as my tummy was rumbling loudly waiting for my afternoon tea after the treatment. The food was lovely. Pool and changing room a little bit of a squeeze, guessing it would be quieter mid week as I went on a Friday afternoon. Missed out on the hot drink and snack on arrival as was not informed on how to receive this, however I could have asked if I was that bothered. I feel they’re could have been somewhere to collect a fresh towel rather than having to go to reception. A little bit too far to travel to feel the need to return, if I lived closer then I would.

Myself and my fiancé had a beautiful day and night at the Manor House Spa and Hotel, this being our third visit. Complimentary upgrade to the room on check in which was brilliant and the room was absolutely outstanding. Food at the restaurant on the evening was fantastic and the spa facilities really made our stay that extra bit more special. Both of us had treatments which were great, albeit, the massages could have been a bit better as both of our treatments felt slightly rushed which was a bit disappointing. Besides that, we both had a fantastic day and night and we will be booking up again soon. Hopefully the spa feedback is taken on board by the spa team! Thanks again for a lovely stay and warm welcome!

Arrived to the beautiful venue and we went straight for our 2 course lunch. I had a lamb roast and it was absolutely delicious and the service from the staff was so attentive! We then went to the Spa and were greeted by the lovely receptionist sorry can't remember her name but she was so friendly and welcoming. We got changed into our robes and had a lovely relaxing time enjoying the pool/ Jacuzzi/ steam and sauna then we went for our treatment. Ellie gave me the most relaxing massage and facial it was lovely being pampered! All in all such a lovely day we had just what we needed!

Had a lovely day at the spa, arrived at 9am had our hot drink & pastries which are included. Relaxed in the Jacuzzi, did some laps of the pool before getting our 80 minute facial, very nice! Then a 2 course meal afterwards, I feel food could be improved and maybe someone just mopping the floor every now & then, I witnessed a couple fall due to surface being slippery. Overall the actual spa experience was great:) a small spa but still really nice. Would return

Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Manor House Hotel & Spa do afternoon tea?

Fancy a treat? You’re in luck. The Manor House serves an incredible afternoon tea, and some of the spa packages on offer include it. With delicate cakes and neat rows of innovative sarnies, the only hard part will be deciding whether to put jam or cream on your scones first.

Enjoy all the traditional trimmings in the beautiful orangery-style Manor Restaurant overlooking the grounds, or in the refined ambience of the Beehive Lounge.

Is there a swimming pool at The Manor House Hotel & Spa?

There is, so don’t forget to bring your cossie. Water babies will love the blissfully warm indoor pool at this five-bubble rated spa. At 14m in length, it's spacious enough for some energetic laps.

You’ll feel like you’re on holiday thanks to a huge screen showing beaches, sunsets and the odd crackling fire as you swim! There’s a sauna, jacuzzi and steam room to bask in after your dip, plus a conservatory relaxation room full of day beds.

Is there accommodation at The Manor House Hotel & Spa?

It may be the former hunting lodge of Henry VIII, but at The Manor House you’ll sleep like royalty! With 30 individually designed bedrooms ranging from Cosy Doubles to Manor Deluxe, all have a heritage colour palette and antique furnishings. Rooms are located in the original main manor house and the courtyard, but all boast flat screen TVs and tea and coffee making facilities.

What time is check-in and check-out at The Manor House Hotel & Spa?

You can check-in to the hotel from 3pm and check-out is by 11am on your day of departure. The hotel offers a later check-out time of 1pm for £20, subject to availability. For day spa packages, arrival times vary, so please check your booking confirmation.

Where is The Manor House Hotel & Spa?

You’ll find The Manor House Hotel in the charming village of West Auckland in County Durham. It’s just outside Bishop Auckland, a bustling market town known as the gateway to the Durham Dales. Art lovers will love the Mining Art Gallery - the world’s only gallery of artwork devoted entirely to miners and their work. Auckland Palace is also a must-see, complete with a bright pink throne room.

Does The Manor House Hotel & Spa have a dress code?

No, there’s no strict dress code and the hotel feels delightfully informal and unstuffy. You’re welcome to eat lunch in your robe if you’re here on a spa day.

Is The Manor House Hotel & Spa family-friendly?

Thinking of bringing the crew? There’s a spacious family room in the main Manor building with room for two additional beds, and a children’s menu full of home-cooked family favourites for guests under 12. Treatments at the Manor are adults-only, but kids can splash in the pool at The Manor Spa from 8am to 9am and from 6pm to 7pm daily.

Is The Manor House Hotel & Spa accessible?

Not entirely. If you’re staying overnight, there are level-access bedrooms you can check into, plus the hotel has accessible toilets. But this is a historic hotel so expect to encounter plenty of nooks, crannies and creaky floorboards - and a fair few steps that make access more tricky.

For example, from the main entrance to the swimming pool changing area, there are 25 steps, with no lift and no ramp. From the changing area to the swimming pool, there are 15 steps.

Is The Manor House Hotel & Spa dog-friendly?

Yes it is! The Manor House welcomes furry friends. Pampered pooches can check into dog-friendly courtyard rooms for £10 per night, and they can curl up next to you in the lounge and brasserie so there’s no need to leave them behind when you’re drinking or dining. The meadow to the rear of the hotel makes a good spot for a quick leg-stretch, or take the picturesque riverside path for longer walkies.

Does The Manor House Hotel & Spa have a golf course?

It doesn’t, but you could always swing by Bishop Auckland golf course while you’re in the area. Just four miles away from The Manor House, it has beautifully maintained fairways, challenging layouts and stunning views of Auckland Castle.
