About
The Lake District isn’t just about outdoorsy activities. It can also be a place to kick back, relax and let yourself be pampered. Whether you want to slide into a bubbling Jacuzzi after a long hike or indulge in a top-notch treatment, The Spa at Underscar lets you do all this and more.
Nestled in a beautifully restored 19th-century coach house on the slopes of Skiddaw, it may be just outside the bustling market town of Keswick. But with pin-drop peaceful views over Derwentwater, you could be a million miles away from anywhere. The grounds are a delight, with a central courtyard surrounded by tiered gardens, cascading streams and waterfalls. Even after sunset, stylishly lit paths will lead you through herb and rose beds to the spa.
Here you’ll find a well-equipped gym, along with four tranquil treatment rooms offering results-driven Germaine de Cappucini facials, Neom Organics wellness rituals and The Gel Bottle beauty treats. But the big draw here? It has to be the heavenly heat and hydro facilities. In fact the tranquil 13m indoor swimming pool is just the beginning of your journey into bliss. Take a soak in the Jacuzzi, then detoxify in the eucalyptus-infused sauna and steam room.
Spa days at The Spa at Underscar may feel as relaxing as a holiday, but if you did want to make a longer break of it, 25 cosy holiday cottages await. Just a stone’s throw from the Spa they’re beautiful both inside and out, with balconies and terraces offering panoramic vistas. Some sleep up to six - perfect if a group of you wants to spa and stay together.
Beyond the luxurious amenities, the Lake District is home to some of the best scenery in the UK, so no trip would be complete without getting out and about. Nature lovers can try to catch a glimpse of Underscar’s red squirrels or take a hike up Skiddaw. Culture vulture? Visit the National Trust’s Hill Top House or go for a mooch around the quirky Derwent Pencil Museum. Prefer a spot of retail therapy? Keswick is just two miles away, with its lively Market Square and unique shops.
But when you’ve finished exploring, Underscar awaits. After your treatment, the on-site Bistro offers an idyllic venue in which to unwind with your favourite tipple or two. So whether you have a morning, an afternoon or a whole day of pampering planned, The Spa at Underscar is the perfect place to escape.

The Spa & Wellness at The Spa at Underscar
Come in from Cumbria’s great outdoors at The Spa at Underscar. The perfect way to take a break from all the activities on offer in the Lake District, its sublime wellness facilities are just what you need to soothe you.
First on your relaxation to-do list? It has to be a treatment. Pick from an extensive menu of Germaine de Capuccini and NEOM Organics London rituals that include reviving facials and mouth-watering massages. Your pampering will take place in one of four zen-like spa treatment rooms, and there are beauty treatments like manicures and pedicures to ensure you float out looking as good as you feel.
Post-massage, a relaxation area with comfy loungers beckons. Take a break and relax with a book or magazine, or just enjoy some quiet time. But your feel-good journey doesn’t end here! Take a dip in the 13m indoor pool, before going on a thermal journey through the Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.
The Gym & Fitness at The Spa at Underscar
The Spa at Underscar is all about sheer relaxation. But that doesn’t mean you have to leave your fitness goals at home! Its fully-equipped gym boasts cutting-edge Technogym equipment, with bikes, a rowing machine, treadmills and a cross-trainer to keep you on track.
Prefer to exercise in the great outdoors? You’re in the right place! The Spa at Underscar is perfectly placed for walking, hiking and cycling. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, you could even try a spot of fell running. Trails like Catbells and Helvellyn offer breathtaking views of the stunning landscapes, with fewer tourist crowds.
Because it sits on the lower slopes of the mighty Skiddaw, no visit to Underscar is complete without a cobweb-clearing climb. England’s sixth highest mountain, Skiddaw is a long and challenging hike, but on clear days you can see splendid views of Bassenthwaite Lake. It takes about six to seven hours and you’ll need appropriate clothing. Even in summer it can get cold and windy at the pak.
In the mood for more of a gentle ramble? A walk to the top of Latrigg offers another phenomenal view. Or you could just take the two-mile stroll into Keswick to look at the shops.
Restaurants & Food at The Spa at Underscar
You’ve nurtured your soul at the spa. Now it’s time to show your tastebuds a little luxury, and the good news is that Underscar has its own contemporary Bistro. And the even better news? You don’t have to leave the comfort of your robe to enjoy it!
With comfortable seating and a beautiful decor, the bistro is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Featuring colourful, textured wallpaper, it includes the work of Keswick artist Penny Fowler on the walls.
Grab a coffee and scone before you go for your treatment, or nibble an indulgent High Tea after a day spent swanning around the spa. Then as the sun goes down you can sink into an armchair and enjoy your favourite tipple. A Lakes Distillery Gin and tonic? Oh go on then. You’ve twisted our arm!
